The article “Web Art: A History of Internet Art” tells a story about the origins of Internet art and what made it different and stand out. To start, the article talks about Net.art. It was a combination of graphics, emails, images, and texts that were combined to create an art piece that displays a story to the viewer. What made net art unique was that it was more text-based art than “optical art”. Net art took off during the mid to late 90’s and was a cultural phenomenon. Modern-day internet is dominated by companies and powerful countries that provide us with more information rather than art. However, in the 90s the internet had almost no restrictions and artists took over the platform. Some popular Websites that displayed Net Art were irrational.org and Jodi.org.ada. The first website listed many numbers of phonebooths around London and allowed random people to be able to reach anyone at any time. Net art was a controversial medium that showed wild and crazy ideas and truly showed when the internet was free range. After reading this article I have become super interested in net art and want to explore more about it.
