John Cage was a brilliant musician who changed the musical world. Ever since he was young he was known as “being radical” and different. As a child being different led to lots of bullying and Cage would constantly worry about when people were going to come and beat him up. He was known to be eager for a friend and and odd soul. However no matter what, Cage always stayed true to himself and thankfully he did because without Cage the music industry would not be the same. One of Cage’s most famous works is his performance called “4’33”. Cage walked up to a piano sat down and made gestures with his hand, however he performed in silence for exactly 4 minutes and 33 seconds. This performance created and uproar and controversy becuase he sparked a new meaning for performance and music. When Cage explained his performance he said “There is no such thing as silence” and that “you could hear the wind stirring outside during the first movement. During the second, raindrops began pattering the roof, and during the third people themselves made all kinds of interesting sounds as they talked or walked out”. When I first watched Cage’s “4’33” performance I was getting a bit irritated halfway through and by the time it ended I was extremely confused. However, after listening to Cage’s explanation I began to understand the performance and thought it to be interesting and innovative. Overall Cage was known for being creatively unique and making work that changed and shifted the music industry forever.
